Thanks so much for sharing this! Where I live people always tell me about Maslow, as a justification for focusing on materialist pursuits as the top priority -- because they are never rich enough to have time for higher pursuits. They can't imagine that I've been to very poor countries where people are higher on the "pyramid". Now I'll know what to answer!
